We consist of billions of cells, the building blocks of our bodies. Between them is a matrix, a gel in which cells are embedded. This matrix provides support, and allows cells and the matrix to communicate with each other. In case of disease, the cells and matrix can become damaged, and sometimes the body is unable to repair this. Then, an organ can lose its function. To repair this, I create a gel that acts as a replacement matrix. And to create a suitable environmens for cells, I make it to scale, in the form of very small spheres. Exactly the same size as the cells. So called microgels provide the necessary support. For communication with the cell, adding small molecular building blocks allow us to incorporate various bio-functionalities. Due to the size, shape and functionality of the microgels, we see in the laboratory that cells can form a small tissue using the microgels as a support. And with this approach, we create a tailor-made living environment for cells.
