Take a look around you: do you see anything that's made of plastic? Of course, there's plastic everywhere. And how cool would it be, if we could recycle that plastic not just once, but one hundred times or even more into brand new plastic. Plastic is made of long chains of carbon atoms, just like this bead necklace. We can break apart the beads by heating them. Then, we can use the building blocks to make new plastics. But some groups of beads stay stuck together and heating often involves burning something which produces CO2. And that's why I am developing an alternative recycling method. I recycle plastic in a ball mill, with metal balls that pound against the plastic. This way, all the building blocks come apart super easily and by using kinetic energy — so movement energy instead of heat — we can even use windmills to drive this. This way we can recycle plastic in a very sustainable way.
