By anaerobic digestion or burning of biomass such as plant residues or sludge, you can sustainably generate energy. After all, the CO2 released from burning or anaerobic digestion has previously been taken up by the plant. This makes the use of biomass CO2 neutral. But wouldn't it be great if we could go a step further and stop the CO2 from being released into the air? This would make biomass not just CO2 neutral, but even CO2negative. But how do you decrease the release of CO2? You could store CO2, but you could also make solid carbon powder instead of CO2. That way, less CO2 enters the atmosphere. In our research, we look at the whole biomass chain, from biomass growth to using biomass for energy. By using biomass not only as an energy source, but also reducing CO2 in the process, you create a system where you lower CO2 in the atmosphere. As a result, you cool the earth. If that's not a win-win situation!
