Imagine you’re a soccer coach, and you want to find out who the star players in your team are. But all you see from the game, is the end result. How do you find out which player is your Ronaldo? This challenge also occurs in the use of nanoparticles. Nanoparticles are extremely small metal particles, consisting of 10 to 10,000 atoms. In their production, they can also differ a little bit in shape and size. On this scale, small differences can have a big effect on the properties. Like with soccer players, they all have their own capacities and expertise, but you don’t know which exactly. To find out who the star players of the nanoparticles are , I make a kind of template that can precisely control and vary the size of the particles. This template is made from special molecules, that can click together as building blocks, like KNEX but a million times smaller. With this template, we can facilitate the search for the best nanoparticle team. That way, we can make production processes like the manufacturing of nylon or margarine more efficient.
