Shower gel, a plastic bag and medicine. All products you probably use every day. And all made in a chemical factory. To make chemicals, such as medicines, you need chemicals. These chemicals change one substance into another. These chemicals are often made from fossil fuels like oil. And that is not sustainable.
That is why I research electrochemistry. This uses electricity instead of fossil fuels to make this reaction happen. I do basic research on the interaction between electricity and chemicals. This is quite difficult because the layer where the electrochemical reaction takes place is a hundred thousand times thinner than your own hair. If we understand the electrochemical reaction properly, we can scale it up and use less polluting chemicals. So in the future, the chemical plant near you will be greener and emit less carbon dioxide because it will use electricity instead of oil.
