Do you know that we are consuming more raw materials than our earth produces? Every year around the first of August, we have already spent all raw materials that our earth produces that year. This means that the rest of the year we are consuming the reserves that our planet has built up over the timespan of millions of years. This is of course a problem. In order to reduce the consumption of raw materials in the chemical industry, we conduct research on sustainable production. Students, teachers and experienced professionals work together in order to conduct these chemical processes on a small scale. We do not use these classic flasks, but we employ these tiny microreactors. These reactors consist of small channels in which a chemical reaction takes place. Because those channels are very small, you have better control over the reaction. This results in more efficient and selective reactions requiring fewer raw materials. In this way we can develop sustainable chemical processes so that our raw materials are not used up in August, but at the end of the year.

EFFICIENT USE OF RAW MATERIALS THROUGH FLOW CHEMISTRY

We use more raw materials than the earth produces. In the long run that is not sustainable. Evelien Baeten, of the Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, is exploring how we can optimize industrial processes in such a way that we achieve the same result with fewer resources.
