Imagine having sunlight, air and water to create fuel and food for anybody anywhere on the earth. We did what is called ‘photosynthesis’, but then artificial photosynthesis. So we were able to make a material with coatings that collects sunlight and then splits water to hydrogen and oxygen. And then we’re able to take that hydrogen and feed it to a microorganism that breathes in carbon dioxide and makes liquid fuels. Or it can even breathe in nitrogen and make fertilizer and grow crops. So we have a totally renewable and sustainable way to make fuels, biomass and fertilizer. We’re very excited about this discovery, because for the poor of the world, in a distributed way, using sunlight, air and water, we can feed them and give them energy.

FEEDING THE WORLD WITH LIGHT

Imagine you could produce fuel and food from sunlight. Professor Daniel Nocera of Harvard University did just this by using artificial photosynthesis. He uses a micro-organism that inhales CO2 and produces fuel, or inhales nitrogen to produce fertilizer.
